Court rules that
any sampling violates copyright law
A US federal appeals court has ruled that rap artists should pay for every
musical sample included in their work, even is it concerns minor, unrecognizable
snippets of music. Lower courts had already ruled that artists must pay when
they sample another artists' work but up to now it had been legal to use musical
snippets as long as it wasn't identifiable. The court said that federal laws
aimed at stopping piracy of recordings applies also to digital sampling.
