31-01-01 Depeche Mode to preview new songs online
Depeche Mode has begun posting MP3 previews of songs from its new album "Exciter" on its website. The first track to appear is "Dream On," which will likely be the first single from the album. "Exciter” will be out in the US on May 15 and a day earlier in the UK. The band plans to offer two previews per day online.
30-01-01 Napster to become subscription service
Bertelsmann AG announced on Monday that it is planning to implement its long-anticipated subscription version of Napster this summer. Bertelsmann is convinced that they can introduce in June or July of this year a subscription model, with a real digital rights management system. According to a study conducted by Bertelsmann, 70 percent of the 25,000 Napster users surveyed said they would willingly pay for a subscription version of the service.

Four new tracks from the new Manic Street Preachers album “Know Your Enemey” have been made available at www.staybeautiful.net The four tracks are “Ocean Spray,” “Miss Europa Disco Dancer,” “Found That Soul” and “Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children.” All the tracks are available in Realplayer format.

TVT drops copyright infringement suit against Napster
TVT Records has dropped its copyright infringement claims against Napster, becoming the first record label to fully settle with the file-exchange service. Under the agreement TVT reached with Napster, the company will drop the lawsuit it filed last June seeking an estimated $1.5 billion for copyright infringement of 10,000 songs and allow its master recordings to be used for song-swapping on Napster. TVT will also promote the new Napster business model.
23-01-01 IBM develop protection software against Napster-like programs
IBM has announced the release of the latest version of its music anti-piracy software, EMMS (Electronic Media Management System). EMMS was designed to combat wholesale music trading on popular online platforms like Napster and Gnutella. IBM's EMMS is said to work against Napster-like programs by encoding music in a way that allows copyright holders to retain control over the manner in which the music is distributed. EMMS will not prevent users from sending songs encrypted with the technology to other users. However, it will enforce restrictions on subsequent copies so that, for example, the next user may only be able to play the song once, the following user might only be able to hear a clip from the song, and the user after that will get no more than a useless filename.
20-01-01 Sony to sell CD samples online before release
Sony Music Entertainment will for the first time ever sell online samples of music from new CD's before they get released to shops. Sony Music in Japan has already been selling music online at its "Bit Music" site at http://bit.sonymusic.co.jp, but never before the CDs' general release. The company does not plan to start such sales abroad. Japanese fans will be able to play the releases on their computers, special download players such as MP3 or suitable mobile telephones. Each download will cost 350 yen, which is approximately three dollars.

U2 are taking part in a promotion, which will see some of their most popular tracks being made available as downloads. The track listing from one of all of their their albums will be put up on www.u2.com every fortnight and fans can simply vote for their favorite song. The most popular track from their second album player “October” was “Gloria” and is available for download right now.
11-01-01 Thomson announces updated MP3 format.
A new version of MP3 is coming. Thomson Electronics, the company that co-developed the MP3 format, has announced an update to the format. Called MP3Pro, the new format drops file sizes in half while retaining the same quality. The new format will be compatible with existing MP3 players. Thomson says it plans to release the new codec in the summer of 2001.

Sony have launched three CD players, capable of playing discs containing MP3 files: a stereo model, a portable model and an car model. Sony is the first big electronics company to do so.

Compaq develops jukebox for digital music files
Compaq has developed a stereo jukebox for storing and playing digital music files such as MP3s. In some respects, the product looks more like stereo equipment than like a PC, as the Compaq’s Music Center hooks up to a television for viewing an interactive song database. It also features a CD player and connections for buying CDs online.

The Dave Matthews Band has made a free download of "I Did It," the first single from the group's upcoming new album “Everyday” available online. The single is available at the band’s website in MP3 and Liquid Audio formats.

Online custom-compilation firm Musicmaker.com closing down
Musicmaker.com is to liquidate and dissolve. The custom-compilation firm’ has ceased operating due to poor stock performance, tough competition and scarce financing. The decision to close down has come only 18 months after its start-up.

Papa Roach ringtones available online
Papa Roach’s songs "Last Resort" and "Broken Home" can be downloaded as ringtone for cell phones. The downloadable files are available from www.yourmobile.com. Other tunes include Santana's "Put Your Lights On," Travis's "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?," Rage Against The Machine's "Bulls On Parade," Guns 'N Roses' "November Rain" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman."

Napster stimulated CD sales last year, as it turned out to be the biggest sales year ever. According to SoundScan, overall sales were up 4 percent over 1999's previous record of 785.1 million units sold from 754.8 million.
05-01-01 MP3.com unveils new online music plans
MP3.com has unveiled a new initiative to harmonize retailers, labels, music players, hardware and software tools. The proposed Music InterOperating System consists of existing applications and services on the new MP3.com Developers Network (MP3DN) and also will include other technology to be introduced over the coming year. MP3.com expect to connect a music retailer with a device manufacturer and an online locker service in a way that will make it one transaction. Another Music IOS component, not yet available on the MP3DN site, is the new Beam-it software developers kit (SDK), which will let consumers add licensed portions of their personal CD collection to an online MP3 music account.
04-01-01 Intel enters MP3 market
Intel is entering the MP3 consumer retail market with a portable digital audio player. The company says the Pocket Concert audio player will hold up to four hours of sound with twice the memory of current models for storing digital audio files such as MP3’s. The audio player will be available in February at most computer stores and online retailers. The player is priced at $299.99.
03-01-01 Edel Music makes music catalog available to Napster
Edel Music has agreed to make its entire catalog available to Napster when the music file-exchange company launches its new membership model later this year. Napster is developing the new model through a joint venture with Bertelsmann eCommerce Group.
