Scour lays off 52 persons due to high legal costs
Scour has declared that investors with whom it was working to provide the company's next round of financing have decided not to move forward, due to concerns about the cost and management distraction that would result from the Company's pending litigation. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA,) the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) have recently sued Scour over copyright infringement. As a result, Scour announced that it has laid off 52 employees. The company said that it remains confident that the lawsuits are without merit, but recognizes that it the lawsuit is far from over.
Faith Hill enters internet music debate
Faith Hill has spoken out regarding the debate on internet music piracy. The singer, who is a strong supporter of Artists Against Piracy, spoke out on behalf of the songwriting community, stating that she has been privileged to work with the best songwriters in the music business and that those people are creative treasures whose songs should be exploited for the enjoyment and pleasure of music fans, not for the monetary gain of others. |

Study reveals that Napster is being banned from increasing number of universities
A new study reports that it is becoming increasingly difficult for college and university students to access Napster's MP3-swapping service. In a poll of 50 public and private universities and colleges from across the country it turned approximately 34 percent of those institutions surveyed had banned Napster access to students and faculty who use campus servers. Those that have banned Napster include New York University, Notre Dame and Rice University.
Aimster said to be in talks with Intel after nearing the 1 million user mark
Aimster, the new Napster-like file-exchange program that uses America Online's Instant Messaging service, revealed that it has held initial talks with Intel to forge ties. Aimster also plans to announce that it has attracted 1 million AOL users less than one month after the program was launched on August 8. Intel recently said that the peer-to-peer computing, like Aimster provides, could very well become increasingly important to the future of the internet. |

360hiphop.com, an interactive hip-hop site headed by Russell Simmons, has teamed with Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella Enterprises in a three year exclusive contract to develop both off- and on-line web-centric programming.
Beggars Group to launch online music service with MP3.com
MP3.com and the Beggars Group of record labels have collaborated their technology and content in a partnership deal that includes the launch of a subscription music service this month. Following in the steps of recently released MP3.com channels, the Beggars Group Channel will offer access to streaming music and selected promotional MP3 downloads. The Beggars Group includes artists such as Prodigy, St. Etienne, and The Charlatans UK. |
